Have a x360 JD with Kawasaki engine FS 651V-ES05-R. Yesterday fill with fuel and started up to mow and began backing up and Backfired loud. Tried to restart and now just shoots out lots of gas from exhaust pipe and no start . Took out plugs and they fire but lots of gas coming from cylinders. Checked fuel celanoid and it is working fine. Called JD and talked to mech he told me need new engine . $1500 only 475 hrs . Any help or ideas would really help. Darrel

Hi Darrel,

This machine was made from 2008-2015 according to the web information.

No one knows for sure it needs and engine until it is properly evaluated by testing the compression and checking the fuel system. Most shops can easily do this in an hour.

It's way too premature to say it needs an engine. (That is just a reasonable guess at this point)

Aside from that they under quoted the cost of this engine and did not even consider the labor cost involved.

I would expect the final cost to be over $2000.00 dollars to get this fitted with a new engine if that is the actual problem.

could be as simple as a piece of debris got dislodged and ended up holding the needle open. Turn the fuel off, pull the plugs, set the plug wire where it cannot ground and create a spark. Drain the fuel in the carb bowl until it stops. Turn the engine over for 10 seconds and let it sit 1/2 hour. Turn it over again to be sure no more fuel comes out. Put the plugs back in and crank it, see if it runs for a second. If not spray a little Berryman's B12 into the air cleaner and try again. If it starts then your carb needs cleaning. Also check the oil level to be sure that fuel has not diluted it. If you have a compression tester, you can try that too. If you feel up to it pull the valve cover off and make sure that all the push rods are in place.

Carb needle sticking open. Clean or replace needle and seat.
Checked fuel celanoid and it is working fine.
Please describe this testing procedure. What is fine about it?

Cease trying to start it. She is flooded literally with gas. You need to fix the over fueling issue and drain the oil a couple times.

Called JD and talked to mech he told me need new engine .
JD tech is an idiot. Do not take what they said as gospel. He hasn't even looked at it, just like us keyboard jockeys.

Shut the fuel OFF until you fix and pressure test the carb inverted. Carb needle needs to hold 7psi for 30 minutes. Look on youtube for carb pressure testing videos.
