I had my mower service and they replaced the drive belts and a pulley. After I got it back the mower goes twice as fast, which is OK but when I take my foot of the gas pedal it does not completely stop. This occurs in forward or reverse. I have to quickly shift gears (forward/reverse) to keep from running into something. The mechanic said that is just the way that mower is and can do nothing about it. This never happened until after they serviced it by replacing belts and a pulley. Is there a fix for this? It does not seem correct that JD would put a mower on the market that operates this way. It seem too dangerous.

You do not have a gas pedal on your 95. Clutch ( it isn't a clutch per say...but you know what I mean) is on the left and brake on the right...that is all. When your mechanic put the new drive belt ON he set the first idler (first off the engine sheave) too close to the engine. Use 17MM box wrench, loosen the nut and move pulley away from the engine pulley about 1" and a 1/2"...should be right back where it was. Second thing...DO NOT shift from forward to reverse to stop it!!! EVER...I mean it!!!

Disregard what I just said. You've got mechanical vari-transmisson. I completely forgot about that...SORRY!!!

So with Vari-transmission what you originally said does not apply? Do you have any idea why this is happening?

It seems to me they put the wrong size pulley(bigger)...that would explain why it goes faster and why is does not stop(belt stays too tight).
Can you measure the pulley they replaced and then see if it matches what is called for...then if different, you have an argument for the mechanic to redo it.

Oh. I just thought...the pulley could be the right diameter but not wide enough for the belt if it has a 5/8 in belt for example and the pulley is for a 1/2 in belt. That would make it ride farther out on the pulley and have the same effect of a bigger pulley.

Then get a new mechanic. IMO

No. All I said is pretty much correct other then you don't have the pulley to adjust...and I, really, am not sure what or where the problem is. Sorry again.

It goes faster because (most likely) they over-adjusted the "clutch cable" so now the tranny plates are farther apart. I need to find diagram for this before I say anything else.

Shiftsuper has a good point there...maybe the V-belt is too wide?

Boy 'o boy...there is this clutch rod with an adjustable yoke at the end. Then there is this nose bearing on top of the vari-sheave that makes it go up and down. A hole lot of idlers in-between. A possibility of a wrong belt installed...etc. Gosh, I wish I could tell you where the problem is...but I can't without actually seeing it. Honestly, I can only advise you to go back to the guy who did the belt change and talk to him about this issue...again.
