john deere LA115 deck noise

original blades worn out and i replaced. insured i installed them correctly. now about every 3 to 5 minutes while the deck is ingaged i hear a loud noise lasting about 3 seconds comming from the deck area. loud enough for neighbors to hear. at first i though the blades were hitting the deck, could not find any indication of that. the sound is hard to describe, similiar to what you would expect if you put a steel bar into the blade path. sound stops if i disengage the deck when i hear the sound. looked over the deck components and didn't find anything suspiciour.

Since this problem seemed to rear its ugly head when the blades were changed I believe I'd be checking them frequently until I found the problem.

When parts finally fall out in the rocks and gravel then I always say, I'll bet that's what I've been hearing. :laughing:

Sound like the blades are hitting togather or into the deck.

Finally able to get back to my problem. Drove the mower onto the carport, raised the deck, got the flash light and started to look. Visual inspection revealed nothing. Performed touch & feel inspection. Slowly rotated blades to see how close they came to each other. There I found the problem. One of the blades was slightly longer, I could barely feel them touch each other. Actually did not know which (or both) blade was longer. Removed the blade on the discharge side (easiest to get to) and stroked the end about 24 times with a file. Reinstalled, rotated by hand and could not feel contact between the blades. Started the engine, engaged the blades, cut the yard and no noise. I think with the deck engages more vibrations existed that may have made them have greater contact with each other. Typical after market junk and some even have the nerve to boast OEM.

I believe I'd be taking both blades off and finish the manufacturing process. I'm not all that critical about blade balance but this may be an instance where the blades should at least be the same length and balanced.

i have never had that problem with after market blade they are just as good as oem i think
