Just happened a few moments ago. a loud pop then clanging noise. The blade in not engaged at this time. I just turned on the engine and I hear this noise. When I step on the brake the noise disappears. When I release the brake it comes back. I think it's coming from the gear box underneath the seat. Your thoughts?

Before you go after the tranny, get under the unit with the deck off, and check the belt, belt routing and all the pulleys. May just be a bad idler pulley or a bad belt.

+1 on what Rivets said. Especially if the noise you have is a whining/grinding. Seen a lot of idler pulleys go bad.

Hi, when I heard the noise, I thought it might be the pulleys too. But the noise occured when the blade was not engaged. The pulleys are not in motion. It is grinding/clanking when I am just riding it. I am thinking now it might be a bigger problem. The noise is more concentrated towards under the seat near the large back tires.

How old is your L110?
About how many hours does it have on it?

The tractor is about 14 years old with about 320 hours. I took a closer look this morning. When I turn on the engine the belt that goes to the back of the tracker underneath the seat is turning a pulley(I guess). Clearly now it's coming from this area. Might be rubbing against something or something more complicated.

That is the drive idler pulley imtalking about. If you have never changed the belt or that pulley in 14 years, my bet is that both are bad.

Key broken in the pulley on top of transaxle maybe..!

Would it run for 14 years without a new belt at some point being fitted..?

Update. Well, I was told by the repair shop that my transmission is the problem. I am a little disappointed since it had only ` 230 hours and ~ 15 years of use. It will cost me 1000 to fix it. I found a used Turff Torq K46 replacement part on ebay but my mower has K46v. I was also told some used part will not fit unless it is the exact part. It is a hard choice to make ... I will spend more than 1000 to buy a new mower. Then I ask my self, another John Deere or something else. Any suggestions ~ 1500 price range?

Sorry to hear. We never want to hear of this.

If... the L110 cost you $1500, 15 years ago, your annual was very low. If it was my choice, I'd upgrade and sell it for parts.

Indiana should have many good, used small JDs available by private, dealer trades and auction sale. Review your needs, but bigger may also be better. Have some fun doing it!
