I have an older John Deere L100 with a Briggs and Stratton 31F707-0112-E1 I replace the carburetor last year. I replaced the fuel filter this spring.

After a couple of mowings the engine sputters and spits when the blade is engaged.

Any idea where I should start troubleshooting? I've played with the carburetor adjustments, but that doesn't seem to be helping.

check your blade spindles see if you can move them by hand to see if they move easy if not bearings are gone or it might be the fuel shutoff solenoid on the carburetor acting up, or a piece of trash got past the filter (not very likely) and is clogging up the main jet...

Engine sounds rich to me. Make sure there isn't gas in the oil and also make sure the air filter isn't clogged. Even if it looks clean can still be clogged.
