Picked up a John Deere JS28 Push mower last year. This year it fouls plugs terribly and burns fuel like crazy. Not very impressed with a one year old mower, but what can I do. I've checked the carb and don't see any kind of adjustment on it. How come it starts running rich all the sudden? I can't even finish mowing my back yard (small yard) without filling up again and cleaning the plug. Anyone have advice?

I believe that mower has a Briggs engine on it with an auto choke. My guess is the auto choke is not fully opening when it starts up. The auto choke is located behind the muffler. You'll need to take a flat screwdriver or a chisel and hammer down the little tab by each of the two bolts holding the carb on so they can be removed. Should be a 1/2" head on the bolts I believe. Good luck! Hope your part of Kansas isn't getting any tornadoes!!

I was so happy to come across this post. We have had the same issue. My husband checked the auto choke and it is not staying open. Once he opens it, the mower starts right away. We have restarted it easily several times. My question is how do we permanently fix the issue now that we have isolated the problem.

Find and post the numbers off of the engine...

Thanks
