Hi, I'm a newbie to this forum. I have a John Deere GX75 small rider with a Kawasaki FC290v-cs10 9 hp. engine. I went to start the mower yesterday and I thought it was blowing fuel out of the exhaust. Then I noticed it was blowing oil both smoke and black oil. It stalled after about 5 seconds. Crank case oil is clean and at the right level.
Any ideas out there? Maybe a catastophic valve failure? I haven't pulled the valve cover off yet.
Also, I can't find an exploded view of the Kawasaki engine. I like to get an idea of what to expect prior taking things apart.
P.S. The mower worked fine on the last mowing.
Thanks,
Glenn

If you do a compression test you will find that it will be high because of the oil in the cylinder, but do a test anyway, could be the head gasket, rings, piston and thats just a start. highest reading should not be less then 71psi.

I see the dates on this issue are old, I am not able to find what the answer was or how it was resolved, I have the exact same problem with my GX75 Kawasaki engine. Blowing oil through breather tube into carb. compression higher than normal due to oil in cylender, too much oil to be just a bad valve seal. Anyone know what Glenn's problem was?

I have the same problem. How did you resolve it?
I'm looking at a used engine on eBay for nearly $400 delivered. Of course, it may only run one weekend.

are you looking for FC290v or other engine, because the fc290 is cheaper than that.
