John Deere GT242 Will not pull up hill

Hi,

I have a problem with my GT242 John Deere. We have had it since 1996 and I must say it takes a licking and keeps on ticking! It now gives me trouble when I first start out. I have to give it a little push to get it going forward. Once it is moving I can mow unless I start up to steep a slope. Some of these slopes are not very big. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for any comment,

Check the transmission belt (upper belt) lately?

The belt is tight and not worn. Thanks for your reply.

Inspect drive belt from engine to trans-axle for replacement, shop online for best price and possibly free shipping.

John Deere GT242/GT262 Manual | eBay I would invest in technical service repair manual if you plan on keeping tractor, should include troubleshooting section as well as instructions & valuable information.

Thanks mechanic mark. But we have already checked that. Any other suggestions.

If the belt is not slipping or too loose that leaves only one thing it could be: Transaxle is going out.

I was afraid of that. Did not want to even think of it.

Thanks,

Give folks at Tuff Torq a call and see if they can help you out. You can purchase kits, parts, transaxles, etc. directly from them and have them shipped to your door.

Just had similar issue with by GT242. Belt looked good but I replaced it anyway with one from John Deere store. Side by side new belt was actually slightly longer than old and I was not very hopeful. But new one cured problem. New belt was thicker, more girth than old which was worn kind of thin. Almost gives me whiplash when i pop clutch in all gears. Maybe you should consider this. Cost of belt was about $28. Good Luck PS If you go this route make sure belt is securely on all pulleys as when I started mine up it had fallen off front one and almost ruined new belt. Also, owner's manual gives no advice on replacing pulley. I had to remove some of guides and take loose the steering rod to change belt out. Also had wife push in clutch to remove old belt and put on new one. good luck

Thanks for the info on the belt. My husband changed the belt and it runs great! Pulls like it use to. The JD Dealer has given us the wrong belt and we thought we had a problem with the mower for about 3 years. So thankful for you people!

Thanks again,
