John Deere 214 rear drive belt help!

I inherited my Grandfather's John Deere 214 lawn tractor. It is in great shape, with some new parts and a newly refurbished deck. I am trying to get everything back together, and get the mower up and running, but I can't for the life of me get the rear drive belt back on.

Is there some trick to getting this belt back on? Do I need to run the belt around the variator first and then around the pulleys?
