I just picked up another 212 and got it running.
The variator was adjusted so tightly that it held the clutch pedal down when
pulled all the way back. Worked more like a hand clutch than a variator.
I cleaned up the pulleys and adjusted the variator so the clutch would work,
but now it chatters badly when letting out the clutch.
It's like the variator is jumping around under the tractor.
Of course I can't really see that while operating it, but it feels like its bouncing.
Variator still doesn't work quite right either.
I was thinking it may have the wrong belt on it.
They probably need replacing anyway now that I have it going.
Any other thoughts as to what might cause this symptom?

If the variator is visible maybe you could jack one rear wheel up and observe it operating while running.

A veriator is actualy and consists of a hydraulic pump an a hydraulic motor assembled in a small sealed package. The end user can only change oil and filter. Adjustment is externally
Check oil codition and level.
