John deere 155c locked up

Hey Fellers. Here's my problem. I was mowing yesterday and the mower just stopped dead. Briggs twin v-tek. good oil level and fuel. I turned the switch on and off and it was though the battery had been disconnected. I found the 20 map fuse was blown and replaced it. I don't have a wiring schematic so don't know what it fuses but after replacing it the starter tries to turn but the fly wheel willl not spin. It just locks up. I have dropped the mower deck and disconnected those belts. I've checked for blockages like gumballs which might jamb the drive pulleys and belts. The flywheel will not turn by hand. Mower is 4-5 years old with 180 hours
and well serviced by the dealer. I'm stumped. Any hints you might suggest will be greatly appreciated. I'm going to search the forum to see if anyone else has had the same problem but wanted to throw this out before I started looking here

Hmm, it appears from what you stated, and the symptoms point to a seized up engine.

No, Chance..it turns out the clutch was locked up. Received the new clutch and now I have a different problem. The old clutch came off easy and the new one slips right on but the original clutch bolt stops dead a half inch from the threads. put the old clutch back on and same thing, the bolt is a half inch short. the two clutches are the same size and the new one is also a JD part. Both are manufactured by warner. I put a longer bolt in with no problem but the clutch stabilizer bracket is now too short to reach the clutch housing. I'm at a loss to explain how the original bolt is too short. I'm in the midst of making a frame extension so I can lower the bracket but, jaysus, changing a clutch ought not be this much trouble. this is just spooky.. :confused2:

No I'm afraid not... Here's the next chapter.. I talked to tech services at Warner about the original bolt not fitting. They concluded that the drive pulley that the clutch attaches to must have slipped down the main engine shaft. I took an inspection mirror and looked above the pulley and sure enough the main shaft coming out of the engine had about an inch of clean shaft exposed above the pulley. Everything above that was dirty as might be expected after a summer of mowing. I took a wood block and a small hammer and tried to tap it back up. No Luck. I found the key way on the back of the shaft and felt around the pulley assembly for an allen jamb nut. There is not one. It was then I noticed that on the face of the pulley assembly there is a pressed key way that should mate with the one on the main shaft. The problem is that the pressed keyway has spun halfway around from the main shaft key way. Unless you see some other option, the only way I see to get the thing off and realigned is to pull the engine off. I guess I need to know if that pressed key way on the face is supposed to serve as a friction lock and is supposed to be halfway around. About the clutch alignment tool, the clutch has a key that mates to the keyway in the bottom spindle of the pulley assembly. It appears to slip on and dead seat on the shoulder below the drive pulley. I must have had it on and off a dozen times trying to find my problem. I appreciate your comments, Chance and value any suggestions.
