My JD STX 38 was running fine until one day I started it up and white smoke started pouring out the exhaust. Any thoughts out there?

Couple of checks 1) is the oil level correct? To high? Low? If correct 2) next check compresion by removing the plug and while the plug is out look at it. Is it clean or clogged with oil?

blown head gasket, replace it

Hey jddoc,
Why waste my time replacing the head gasket until I diagnose the real problem. Seems like the carb needle valve stuck and flooded the cylinder and crankcase with gas.:smile:

Hi Sudsy
Refering back to my mail "check the oil level" geuss whet you would have seen? Oil level to high and oil smelling like gasoline!

When this flat top Kohler engine starts smoking suddenly the head gasket is blown between the cylinder bore and the pushrod galley. On the intake stroke oil is pulled into the cylinder, causing excessive exaust smoke. This is a common problem.
