my lx277 AWS has had intermitent problems with no spark to the right cylinder. Typically it would happen for a few seconds and then stop. Now it is only firing on both cylinders for a few seconds, then back to only the left one. Any ideas on how to go about diagnosing the issue?

The only way to tell if its losing spark is with spark testers.
Use them with the engine running and check to see if it does lose spark.
From what you say though i would say that its not losing spark but running rough due to carburation problem but i could be wrong.
Try the spark tester 1st because its sn easy test.

While the engine is running I removed the right spark plug wire from the plug and theer was no change to the engine. However, when I removed the left spark plug wire from the plug, with the right one attached, the engine dies. I can tell there is no spark going to the left plug.

Is it no spark or maybe a cylinder problem like no fuel getting through.
Only spark tester will show.
Had a vtwin running on 1 cylinder. Had spark.
The rings were worn causing lack of compression.

My mower did this and it was the coil. There is one on each side just go ahead and replace both .

Try removing the kill wire from the offending coil to see if the problem goes away. It is possible the kill wire is intermittently shorting to ground and causing a no-spark condition.

If the design will allow, put a distinguishing mark on both coils and switch their position and see if the problem follows. If the problem moves to the opposite cylinder then the coil is most likely the culprit.

Let us know what you find.
