Though I would share this with you'll, Today i was mowing the yard, after about 30 min. of stedy going, the
engine started to cut out and boging down, i had did this the last time i mowed, so i had changed the fuel filter,
had me stumped, it was just about to quit running with no load, i reached around and loosen the fuel cap, & away
it went, this is a first for me, never saw the vent on a fuel cap go bad, this JD 445 was bought new back in 2001,
we cut about 4 ac. it has almost 700 hr. on it, never had any trouble with Mower other than the Plastic, that is the weak point
of these mowers, we also have a 2000 model JD LT 166, same thing, Plastic all cracked up, I dont know if its the
Sun or the Heat, Its a Shame that JD cant do better, There or Kid Toys laying around that are 20 years old, & not
cracking up Like My Mowers have done, when I get ready to replace these mowers that is going to keep me from Looking

Yes plastic and UV are not friends. My advice is to keep inside when not in use

You are right, JD's weak spot is the plastic. Usually for us in the Texas heat it's the hood getting cracked up and broken. We had a JD STX38 that lost the whole hood. They just don't make John Deere mowers or tractors the same. If you can be lucky enough to find a 5(ish)+ year old mower it will be good if not already worn down. With the large agricultural tractors it 20(ish)+ years. Sorry to here about you quitting the JD club, but it will be cheaper in the long run. My grandfather has thoroughly in-stilled the green and yellow in me, but my dad is a Massey Ferguson man with a Husqvarna lawn mower But as for me, I'm Green!!!
Some of the older tanks were vented with a tube and the cap was not vented.
I think now the replacement tanks are not vented but you have to buy the cap with the cheesy vent.
I have seen the little spring and ball inside gum up and it will stall the pump.
Did you buy a new cap or take the parts out?
BBO , I am still running the same tank & cap, I have learned to just back the cap of 1/4 turn and it seems to let it breath ok,
AS FOR THE PLASTIC STUFF, NEEDING TO BE KEPT OUT OF THE SUN>< Most of us use our mowers in the daylight Hours, How about JD New type Combines, There is Plastic every where on them, They are made to live in the SUN, < > If they gave a Rats A** about the Lawn Tractors They could use the Same Plastic that they are using on there Combines & such>< But I Think the Don't Give a S*** about What we Think, They Think if OUR Blood Runs Green, We will Just Take what every S*** they Want us to have & don't gave a Dam about how it wholes up because we Just Have to Buy the Green Stuff, well for me, I say that A ACE is a Ace & a DUCE is a DUCE, and the Plastic on JOHN DEERE Lawn Tractors Is a DUCE +1,
