Hi to all, new here. Was wondering if any of you could help? A friend has an 80's vintage JD 316. The previous owner had a 20 hp kohler twin installed to replace the original powerplant (not sure what it was) Anyway, the igniton switch was changed with the motor but the problem is this, you can turn the switch to crank and it will crank but will not fire. As soon as you let the clockwise pressure off the key it will fire, but will not fire while cranking? Apparently the JD switch would not work so whoever replaced it with a wheelhorse/kohler switch but its still not quite right.

Wow that is weird, I would tell you friend to make sure to have a Kohler starter, solenoid, and key switch installed to make sure everything is for the Kohler and see if that fixes the issues.

Sounds like you are going to have to do some wire tracing. There are a variety of switches and you either have the wrong switch or the wires hooked to the wrong terminals. The back of most switches are labeled so start there.

S=== this terminal should go to the solenoid
B=== this terminal should go to the battery, but may not be directly connected
I=== this terminal should go to the engine
G=== this terminal should be connected to the ground
A=== this terminal is for accessories
L=== this terminal is for lights

Not all terminals may be used and you may only have five terminals

Solving this problem will also be based on your knowledge of basic electricity and the electrical system of an engine. Good luck
