This is a very helpful forum so I figure I'll give this problem a shot:

I have a JD 265 with 17 Kw that dies once it gets hot, usually after about 30 minutes or so of mowing; it appears to act like it is not getting enough gas. Once the engine cools down it will start and run but will 'kill' again. Virtually everything has been replaced including the solenoid, chip, fuel pump, gas line, filter. I'm out of ideas and am now guessing that maybe the engine is getting so hot that the gas is evaporating before it gets to the carb. (I really doubt this is the cause though since no one else seems to have had this problem with this model/setup however, other engines did have this symptom or so I'm told.)

I am not a technician (sure wish I was) so I would be most appreciative of anyone with another suggestion/idea or has experienced something similar. Thanks in advance.

Has the coil been replaced?

Thanks Polly, we already checked that possibility and everything there is open so that was ruled out. I do appreciate your help.

Evidently, I am alone with this problem; it doesn't look good for me. Everything works great until it gets 'hot' and then it begins to shut down acting like it's not getting enough gas and eventually dies. After it cools down and it will start again. Go figure, I'm out of guesses!

Sure sounds like vapor lock I would try some insulation material like header wrap.
Don't know if you have seen that stuff but that or similar material to wrap the fuel line and carb shielding it from the heat.

What is strange I have a 180 JD with the 17hp KAW in it and have mowed in the high nineties and never had a problem.

Are you sure the fuel pump is working properly.
When it stops pour a little gas into the intake and see if it starts if it does then you know it is fuel.

I though of something else did you buy this mower used??????
Reason I ask is mine has a metal heat shield over the muffler and under the carb when moving air flows through their and carries the heat down and under the tractor.

If that shield is missing then that would be the problem.

Thanks Bart for the suggestions; the fuel pump is new along with pretty much everything else and I did buy this used. I will check the heat shield which would relate to the other possible problem, vapor lock.
Thanks again.

An update to this thread; I found the small heat shield located behind the carb was missing. I am assuming this could be the source of my problem, allowing the heat from the muffler to get to the carb vaporizing the fuel when it gets too hot?/ Thanks to Bart, I never would have noticed this without his mention. Hopefully this resolves my issue. Now, finding a heat shield that will work with this specific application, any suggestions?
I did locate what is called "thermaflect shield" a 5" x 7" pad that might work. Thanks again!
