Hi everyone I was using a mower the other day that did not sound right, it was louder than usual but with a tapping sound. Anyhow idiot here carried on using it and all of a sudden it made a loud noise and completely stopped working with a little smoke coming out from the engine.

After when I went to pull the cord it was stiff to the point that I could not, I checked under the mower and the blade was the same it was stiff. I did manage to rotate the blade which now lets me pull on the pull cord. I tried that but when I pull I can hear noises so have not tried again also oil started flowing out of the top of the engine.

Any help appreciated.

Ohh the engine is a Briggs and Stratton 625e

It doesn't sound good, when you got it to move can you make a full revolution and keep going or does it go to one point and lock up then turn other way a stops at about same point ?

One thing take valve cover off and see if push rods are ok, drain oil and see if any metal parts come out.
Next would be take engine apart and see what you have.

Thank you for the reply.

Yes it does stop does that mean something to you?

I can not take it apart as I do not have a clue about engines I think I would make it worse, also I did take the plastic cover off and a lot of things seem to be riveted.

It could be a broken connecting rod that is jamming into case or another part then you go opposite way it Jams in about same place 180 degrees from last spot.
This is all just guessing, you will need to do some digging to be sure, don't just take my word for it

Yeah,,thats not good.
That motor is toast,,sorry to say,,need to at least take the valve cover off and the main crank cover too just take a peak inside,,i believe you will find a broken rod like mentioned,or something else damaged.

sounds like a broke rod, which let the piston go down further than it should which is why it most likely was leaking oil.

a rod most likely can be had for around $30, or you can buy a new chinese engine for about $120. but when the rod broke its possible other things were damaged with it, only way to know for sure is to look. if u take the blade off, its 4 bolts to get the motor off from there. and another 6-8 bolts to get the bottom side of the motor off to see inside
