Is this a bad volatage regulator?

I have a Snapper tractor with a B&S model 287707 0228 01

The battery is not charging. I'm measuring 12.6 volts DC at the batter with the tractor running AND I'm mesuring 26 volts AC at the battery. Does the fact that I am seeing AC voltage at the battery mean I have a bad regulator?

I looked up the regulator, part number is 794360 (replaces 691188). When I search for this part I'm finding prices ranging from $17 to $47. Is this a case of you get what you pay for or will they all work fine?

The china made regulator on my new John Deere only lasted 75 hours. I say this is an instance where you DON'T get what you pay for so I recommend the lesser amount on these china parts.

Bigjake, keep looking for parts with "good" brand. I am also leery of chinese stuff, but there are probably some good ones out there. Also it's hard to know at the component level (diode) where the parts came from in US parts. Seems $47 is high. I put a regulator in my Fiero for $15. Good luck
