It's not going to be a grass cutter!!! I'm putting on a Briggs 16 twin opposed bypass the gov put a bigger pulley on front it's a MTD 42/12 vary drive I'm leaving the the mower stock except the engine and pulley

I am in the process of doing the same thing. Have a Case 116 with the Briggs twin 16 horse. Put the biggest rear tires that would fit. I an experimenting with different pulleys. Would like to get rid of govenor and get a tach. Everyone asks why, but why not? Will post pics when completed.

I had a murray that i put a 14hp briggs vanguard on and I took the mower deck off, then put a bigger pulley on the motor. i rode it for about an hour and then i took a fast turn and rolled it over on the road. I was not hurt that bad but the motor slammed on the asphalt and cracked the block I took the wheels off and couple other things but it mainly went to the scrap yard.

Be very careful about twistng the tail on any of these hapless stock lawnmower engines much past 3400 RPM. Flywheels crack and shatter, and anything nearby gets, uh, collected.:frown: The best place I've found is a site called heymow.com - Lawn Mower Racing Forum - Index, they are rabid racing mower enthusiasts, and even better, seem to know what works together and how long it lasts!:laughing::wink: Anyway, be safe...brakes, tires, etc. that are fine at 6mph tend to be a little weak-kneed at 30.
