Engine runs normal at high speed with or without load, but at idle it runs rough with a rhythmic idle and will backfire threw carb. Rebuilt carb. This carb does not have a needle valve just a plastic cone that sits over elc. solnoid. Modle is 446777 with a nikki 698494 carb. Or could I have a porblem other than the carb? Thanks.

The jets are up inside the plastic cone you need to run a paper clip, or small wire up in them to clear out any debris that might be in them. It sounds like it has debris/ trash in the low speed jet I couldnt tell you which is the low speed jet so just clean them both to be sure. Also make sure the breather tube is on the throat, and hasnt come off the back its the black tube right on the back of the throat between the throat, and flywheel.

Sounds to me like either a sticking intake valve or partially sheared flywheel key.

Check the valve(s) and spring(s) then adjust clearance.

Thanks for all the advise, ordered a new key and a gasket set. I also heard these engines have some problems with loose valve
seats. Anyway going to try to get repaired next weekend, on the road a lot this spring.
Again thanks a lot for all the help.
