Hello to all. I have a garden that I do every summer but it always gets overtaking by weeds and grass. I have tried keeping tarps and leaves on it all winter to smother it and that didn't work. I till it at the end of the season and at the begging of the season. Several weeks ago I sprayed some weed and grass killer on it (cant remember what kind) and still grass is now coming up before I even get to plant my garden. The weed killer that I sprayed was some kind of eco/pet friendly that my wife persisted on because we have livestock that might get in there, which I can understand where she is coming from. Is there something that I can make homemade that will kill my grass I weeds off in my garden? I still have a few weeks before I need to start planting so if someone has some tips that would be great. Again thanks for your time.

Round up, or gramoxone (Paraquat) will burn all of the weeds down, but they will come back. You will have to weed the garden throughout the year. There are some chemicals that have a residual affect, but you have to be careful. You don't want to put a chemical down that will damage what you plant. In the fall, after you have harvested your garden you can spray a round up atrazine mix on it. The round up should kill most weeds that are up, and the atrazine will prevent ANYTHING from growing for 90 days. Including anything planted within that 90 days. Again you have to be careful. It's difficult to give advice on what to spray without knowing what kind of weeds you have.

Thanks for the input. I do try to weed it throughout the year but sometimes I forget or get busy doing other things and then by that time it is too late. They grow back fast. I will try to keep up on it more this year and see what happens.

If you know how to reach the nearest ag extension office you can contact them. Let them know what weeds you are having a problem with, and what you are planting in your garden. They can tell you what would be the most effective herbicides to use.
