If it's under 50 degrees out when you cold start it,it's normal.Dont worry about it.Also is the smoke black or blue? my Toro 4000 has a 59 kubota diesel and it smokes a little blue on cold start, probably a combination of weather and the fact that the engine has 6500 hrs on it,the valve seals are probably leaking a little...black smoke indicates your passing u burnt fuel out the exhaust ,probably because it's cold but if it's a warm engine that would likely indicate a leaking or worn injector..

I don't have a diesel, but when I start my Kawi in the morning it shoots a big white cloud. After a few minutes of running all is good.
