I have a Ferris 1500, 52"deck w/750 hrs. The mower is leaking hydraulic fluid from inside the left rear tire. After having all the hoses replaced, it is still leaking. Took to another person, took the wheel off and you can see the fluid dripping from between the brake drum and the hydraulic motor. We tried to take the front part off just to see if it is the seal that's the problem but it wouldn't budge. In the parts manual, it does show that it comes apart. Called the dealer and he said no, we have to buy a new motor for $600.00!!! Has anyone had this problem?? What did you do?

Export threadUgh! I feel your pain. Those hubs are very difficult to remove. I do it just like removing a flywheel, but be careful these hubs are cast iron and can break/shatter. I will take the cotter pin out remove the nut and put the nut on in reverse but screw all the way till the axel is flush with the nut. (castle side in) pry and hit that nut/axel as hard as you can. This will break the taper.

I've not removed a Ferris hub but I have removed flywheels and the most often made mistake I see is people using a 16oz. hammer.
Go for the 3 lb. hammer ( minimum ) with a medium smack or an 8 lb. with just a good solid bump. As chance mentioned, flush the nut with the shaft end and hit the shaft end square while the thrust clearance is being held out with a pry bar. I prefer the 8 lb. sledge hammer and every good mechanic has one.:biggrin:
