I have a three year old Husqvarna HU800AWD walk behind mower with a Honda GCV190 engine (manual start). It's been a good starting mower (usually first or second pull) up till this year. I've checked the spark plug and air filter, and filled it with fresh gas.

The only way I can get the mower to start when it hasn't been started recently is to take off the air cleaner, drip a few drops of gas into the carburetor, and replace the air filter. It will start on the first pull after doing that, and will run and restart just fine.

The engine has an auto choke. Is it possible that the choke is not working correctly in this engine, and if so, what is the fix?

Thanks,
John

John, how old is the fuel in the tank? If more than 45 days old, you need to drain the tank and carburetor, fill with fresh fuel and attempt a restart.

Next, the autochoke may be sticking; here's a link to tell you all about it:

Thank you for the reply with the diagram Robert. I pulled the carburetor assembly and cleaned and lubed the autochoke assembly. After doing the clean and lube, the choke was indeed closed, and the mower started immediately after reassembly. I'll wait a day or two and see if it starts again (and check the choke to see if it closes properly when the engine cools down). The mower did have fresh gas , so that wasn't the reason it didn't start.

Thank you for the reply with the diagram Robert. I pulled the carburetor assembly and cleaned and lubed the autochoke assembly.

Some Honda engines fitted to non-Honda mowers may have an issue with the autochoke sticking. See the bulletin /serial number list here and see if your mower is in the affected group.

If it is, and is still under the 3-year warranty, the autochoke may get updated at no cost to you. Step 1 is seeing if it is in the right group.
