I have a Husqvarna HU775H. It's been used about 3 seasons. I took the blade off to sharpen it and put it back on not noticing that I knocked the drive belt off of the idler pulley. It of course did not self propel. I noticed the wheels would move if I pulled them into the air and tried adjusting the drive cable (so I did engage the drive control a few times with the belt off 1 pulley). I finally noticed the drive belt and got it put back on.

Since then, the mower does not pull back like it used to. There is a lot of resistance when the motor is running. I have taken off the rear wheels and plastic shields and cleaned everything. I have tried to adjust the drive cable, but it has not helped. When adjusting for a more "aggressive" drive, the wheels turn even when the drive control is not engaged. The wheels will reverse, but there is resistance (have not tried too much as it seems like a bad idea with them wanting to turn forward all of the time...). When adjusted the other way (the position it was in prior to sharpening the blade), they wheels no longer turn forward when the drive control is not engaged, but they completely lock up when trying to reverse. It also barely moves forward. I have tried adjustments everywhere in between with no luck.

Does anyone have any idea of what might be wrong? The belt looks ok and everything is clean. Did I somehow mess up the gearcase and would a new fix it? Thanks for any help. The link to the parts list is below just in case anything I referred to does not make sense.

Your pull back problem is related to the fact that the belt isn't disengaging all the way. Some of the drive units slipped the drive pulley in the belt when you pull back. If the belt is too tight to allow this slipping motion it will be hard to work with. You most likely created the problem when you adjusted the drive cable with the belt improperly installed.

Thanks. I believe it is one of the ones that slip as there were times you had to disengage and move forward a few inches before it would pull back (when it was working correctly). I have adjusted the drive cable min to max and everywhere in between. How should I be going about it to get it working correctly so that the mower can be pulled back? There is also a tension spring that seems to help it disengage the drive (probably not the right term for what it does, but it's #55 in the parts list). Is it possible that the spring was stretched too far when running with the belt not installed correctly?

Thanks for the help. I ordered a new spring and a new drive belt since it was not much. I'll take it apart again and see if I can get it working correctly again.
