Huge browning

I'm not sure if it's some kind of insect or lack or rain, vbut like never before, large brown areas spotting on 1/4 acre. Is paying for water or something to rid us of insects which way to go?

Cut a slice into the ground with a shovel or scredriver and pry up a bit to see if the soil is dry. If it is that more than likely the problem. If plenty of moisture you can check for grubs by turning over some sod and looking for them. Some grasses go dormant when they get dry, some croak.

Thank you easy simple information.

Could be related to conditions under the top soil. Is it a new lot? Could you have stone under and a thin layer of foils oil on top thus rendering it prone to drying in the mildest of drying conditions?

I have the very same problem. I do think that it is dead and I've been dreaming of having a very nice and well maintained lawn on my backyard
