When mowing the lever for the cruise control will not stay in the selected position all of the time. Any suggestions as to what I need to repair/replace?

You are talking about the orange lever (Honda calls it the "Shift Lever") on the handlebar, yes?

Got a serial number so I can check for any service updates?

What is the approximate age of the mower? Used just at home, or commercially? Any idea of the hours on the mowers?

Firsts thing I'd check is the tightness of the 6mm flange nut, and inspect the entire linkage to see if it is loose anywhere or missing any parts.

Yes, the orange lever. It's a 2005 probably 300-400 hours.

No "known" issues with the shift lever in my database. I'd carefully inspect all the parts, and look closely at the spring seat and shift lever spring. If they appear worn or damaged, replace.
