Out of the blue yesterday, I started to have problems with self propelled on this mower. I checked the driven key and gears on the wheel and all seems well there It seemed like the handle that I pull to engage the drive had little or no spring back when I let go of the handle. Then the unit stopped driving while cutting at all. At one time when I lifted the rear wheels they did turn weakly, but as soon as I dropped it to the ground they quit.

This is a HRB215K4SDA. Serial MZB-6403695 KK It is a 3 speed, I pulled the trans and opened it up and found some brass shavings from the brass gear on the internal input shaft that meshes with the verrtical input shaft that the pulley attaches to and belt turns. The sump/case was almost completely dry..no oil or grease to speak of There was also a plastic disc/spacer that was on top of the gear that was chewed up..looked like it had friction and or heat damage to it.

I am assuming that the transmission is bad and would like to get the part to fix it, although I thought I would see a lot more shavings and damge to the gear than I did. Does anyone have a line on where I can get internal parts? Looked on internet and called a HONDA dealer they are saying on internal parts. I would assume this must be a Dana Spicer of a Tudd Torq etc. and I maybe able to get parts some where.

I am assuming that the trans is bad based on the damage to the teeth on this brass gear.. If there is anything else I should have checked or could still check let me know.
Another question I have besides trying to get parts..What lube should I used..it seemed like it was an oil residue that was in the sump not dried grease. 90 weighth gear oil?

Would appreciate any and all input.

Honda does not offer any internal service parts for this trans. You can still buy the whole trans., part number 20001-VE1-T02, list is about $110, but many dealers offer discounted prices. Google teh part number to find a Honda Dealer selling it online, or use this link to find a Honda Dealer in your area: Find A Honda Dealer

Thanks for the info. I have ordered a new transmission hope to have it before the end of the week.. Do you recommend changing the springs and keys that go onto the axle for the wheel drive gears? They are cheap and if they wear at all might as well do it now. I also noticed a couple of cracks in the plastic wheel hub, where the metal bearing is pressed in to the wheel. I will need to replace them soon also. I really like this mower, I picked it up on the side of the road 4 or so years ago...all that was wrong was bad gas. Do you know an aprox age on this unit?

Springs should be okay to reuse for now, unless obvious damage, wear, etc. is visible Likewise for the ratchet bits.

My crystal ball says this mower was manufactured at the Honda plant in Swepsonville, NC sometime in early 1997. It was wholesaled by Honda to a dealer in Slidell, LA, in early November 1997.

FYI, Honda mowers don't have model years, but use a version sequence or "K-number" to denote running changes. The K4 in the full model name indicated this was the fifth version (they start at K0) of this model. It would eventually build out to a K7 version before being replaced by the HRX-series models (still in production today). The HRB215K4 is notable as it was the last Honda "consumer-targeted" mower still fitted with the commercial-grade GXV-series engine. :thumbsup:
