How to adjust valves

I have a craftsman riding mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine model number 42E707 type 2631 E1. The engine won't turn over with the plugs in but it turns over freely with the plugs out. I think the valves need to be adjusted, but I don't know how to access them. Any ideas?

The valves on the engine you listed are in the block and not the head so valve adjustment is a little different than OHV engines. You will need to read up in the service manual but this style valve arrangement usually doesn't need regular maintenance. Briggs & Stratton's website does not offer the service manual but it does have the operator's manual but it won't be much help. Maybe someone else can offer up the service manual or a place to get a free copy. By the way, the cylinder head needs to be removed and a side access cover as well to service the valves.

Have you had the battery load tested? One way to test a battery is to perform a cranking voltage test. Voltage should stay above 9.5 volts and above 10 volts is even better. You may have a weak battery on your hands. Most OPE batteries have only a six month warranty and if your battery is more than two years you already got your money's worth.

You can search against youtube for briggs L-head or flathead valve adjustment procedure. A bit involved.
