How is it still alive?

Hello everyone.

Gong to try and keep this short, so here goes.

Mom owns a Craftsman mower with a 7HP B&S motor with fresh start. It was purchased in 2002 (03-ish?) and has never been properly maintained. The fresh start cap has probably been empty for years, gas has been left in the engine on several occasions for the entire winter. Oil was added to it once maybe couple years ago, but never actually changed. And yet it is able to start by the third pull every spring.

HOW IS THIS THING STILL ALIVE?!

Are Craftsman mowers that good? I use electric myself to avoid all the maintenance gas equipment requires. I'm lazy like that.

i had a similar one years ago......only reason it aint cutting grass now is the deck rusted completely through.....never failed to crank after setting in the weather all winter.....what a mower ....wish i had took better care of it but then it might not have run as good if it had gotten pampered

It's not Craftsman, it's Briggs. The old engines were built much better than today's models. I have seen Briggs and Tecumseh engines 30-40 year old come out of barns. Guys have changed oil, added fuel and started them with two pulls. Sometimes you just get lucky.
