I recently bought a brand new Honda HRX217VKA. From the first time it was started it surged until it warmed up. Is this normal? I has a HRR216PKA with the smaller engine and it did not surge upon first starting. Could this be because for different design on the two engines or what?

Please advise.

My HRX217VKA will "surge" when first started for about 10 seconds. Not sure if this the auto choke adjusting, or what. It never stalls, and stabilizes at 3000 RPM and stays there. I wouldn't worry about it.

My HRX does the same thing. I would assume its the auto choke doing its thing.

Normal to surge a bit until engine has FULLY warmed up (at least 5 full minutes). After that, it should run smooth at idle, full-throttle, blade engaged or not.

If it continues to surge, there's probably a fuel/air mixture issue, either too much of one or too little of the other. A good dealer can sort it out; use this link to find one in your area. Note: All Honda dealers will provide service, regardless of where purchased (including Home Depot).

Finally, poor running caused by dirt/debirs/gunk in the fuel, or fuel improperly stored is not considered a factory defect and is not generally covered under Honda's warranty. Be sure to get a complete understanding of what is or isn't covered BEFORE authorizing the dealer to make any repairs.
