HONDA HRX 217 gear grinding problem

Hi, I have HRX217 mower with a weird problem that I can't figure out and my local Honda dealer can't fix either. The problem is a left drive wheel grinding when on any left slope. I have replaced two wheels, two drive gears and a new transmission with no luck. It still grinds. On lever ground it works perfectly. I took to my local Honda dealer, again no luck. They charged me $80 but didn't know what was wrong with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. the mower has been in my shed for 2 years now. Thanks in advance,Mike
 
"grinding" doesn't help a lot. Grinding teeth vs teeth? Grinding against the frame? No idea what from, just making noise? Does the wheel skip when this happens?

I don't know if this might help but when we used to build racing engines we would sometimes use modeling clay to determine clearances like between a head and a valve. If you think that it is the gear and wheel skipping, you can put some model clay on the teeth and spin it just enough to engage, then take apart to see what the mesh is. Or maybe you can take one of the old wheels and cut it out in a way to observe the drive gear to wheel interface.
 
Good point. The grinding is also accompanied with the wheel skipping. The grinding noise is the gears not meshing properly. Thanks for the help. This problem has me stumped. I used the mower for several years before this started. I've been using Honda mowers for 25 years and know them inside out, but this problem has me and the Honda technicians stumped.
 
look at the gears. If neither is damaged to where part of the teeth are gone, is there an adjustment for the mesh? Is there an axle bushing that wore oblong? If that isn't evident, use the clay method to measure the mesh. If the wheel doesn't mesh, send it back. There are tons of counterfeits out there that do that. Honda isn't the only one that is happening to.
 
sgkent, I think you nailed it with the counterfeit parts. That's when my problem started. I bought the wheels on ebay and they came in a plain cardboard box. No Honda bag or info. I always go for the cheapest.
I had never considered they were counterfeit wheels on ebay.
Anyway I found a workaround for the problem. There is play in the wheel bearing. I found a washer to fit overtop the bearing taking all of the play out. It worked! unfortunately it makes the bearing hot so I have to oil it well. I'm going to buy genuine Honda wheels and see if it helps. Thanks for your help.
