Honda HR194 - weak transmission.

I am new to this forum but I figured this is the place to look for an answer to a potential project I am thinking of undertaking this winter. The house I purchased came with an HR194 lawn mower. A really solid unit. Despite its age it starts on a first pull and the blade-clutch system is bee's knee since my front yard is wooded with lots of small branches. The mower has a two speed self propelled system. However, it is too weak to actually propel the mower. If I lift the back, it will spin the wheels but I can hold the wheels with my hand and there is little resistance. In other words, it is slipping badly. I have seen some youtube videos indicating that this may be due to transmission needed to be refilled with lubricant. Can the experts here confirm that this is indeed the case. I wouldn't want to go through the troubles of removing the axle if the clutch is burned since the internal parts are no longer available.
Thanks!

Oh how nice, it looks like the parts are readily available after all. What do you reckon is the matter with the unit? Is it the gears? It looks like I maybe able to buy a new one on ebay for $130. This may be cheaper than buying parts for it.

Absolutely, I am also suggesting this manual if you plan on performing maintenance & repairs.

Great, based on your experience what should I expect when I open the case up? Lots of worn gears?

Absolutely if not worse.

Crap, I was hoping it is something simple like a worn shift fork.

No point in further speculation until you start to properly diagnose the unit. It could also be a slipping belt - check for grass buildup on the drive pulley on the crankshaft.

Thanks, No I ruled out the belt, it is fits very tight, indeed.
