I just replaced a lot of warn parts on my Honda mower. It was surging before I did this work, which included a new carb. Anybody got any ideas on how to fix this. It starts very easily (first or second pull).

Tell us more about the surging. Does it surge at full throttle or slow throttle? Does it surge with the blades engaged or released or both?

On the back of the mower deck is the serial number; share that with me and I can post some troubleshooting information:

It was surging before I did this work. It surges at all speeds and the blade engagement does not seem to matter either and it sounds like it might settle down every once and a while, for about 10 seconds and then it starts the surging again. I also replaced all the cables on this mower. I bought this mower back in 1998 and it has run great until now. I thought that it might need a carb job and I bought a new carb from Plano Power and it wasa packaged in an OEM package from Honda. It still cuts and gets up to speed the transmission works and everything, it just sounds terrible.

With the engine running spray some carb cleaner around the carb and see if there is a change in RPM. If so, you're not getting a tight seal somewhere....possibly a bad or reversed gasket or a cracked part. Good luck!

Might be a vacuum leak; be sure to install new gaskets and get the two bolts holding the carb/air cleaner assembly nice and snug. It's easy to get the gaskets on wrong or in the wrong location.

Surging is almost always due to incorrect fuel flow or incorrect fuel/air mixture. Now and then the governor can get out of whack, so double-check the linkage, springs. etc. and make sure they are correct.

Air cleaner clean and seated correctly?
Spark plug dry and gapped right?
Fresh gasoline in tank?
Does surging stop if you keep choke on?

Confirm you got the correct carburetor; for this mower, it's Honda Part Number: 16100-Z0L-023 ($15.08 list price)

Just ordered the gaskets and will replace them to see if that is the problem. Will let you know if the problem is resolved.

Got the gaskets in this afternoon, put them on and the mower runs as sweet as ever. I wonder if the gaskets were going bad before I did any work, because it was surging then too.

I want to thank you guys for the advice and the schematics, they were a big help!

Also a shout out to the guys at Plano Power Equipment for the fast handling of my order. Everything arrived and I was able to get my yard mowed before the rains come.

All,

I have the same mower and issue. Where can you find the part numbers for the gaskets and where to order them? I will order a new carb as well.

I see a total of 4 gaskets and 3 different types.

My mower has not run correctly for years.

Thanks,
Brian

Look on your mower for a model and serial number. I found mine at Plano Power. If you have the information for the mower you can find the parts and they have exploded pictures so you can see the exact parts you need.
