Honda Clutch problems

Folks, first post but not even close to a forum new guy

Mower just stopped while using it and pull start wouldn't move
Checked everything and all is good.
So I sent it off to a shop and he doesn't get into these kind of problems but he cut the belt drive and it runs now anyway.
I had figured by this time that it is in the clutch mechanism and have it apart.
My question. :
My crank on my engine has 2 key way slots and when I took it apart i only see one and the Honda nation blow up only shows one.
Is there suppose to be 2??

I am sure I will have new questions

Went back out and looked it over and tried fitting again.
So all I need is 1 Key.
I put it back together (pics).
And everything looks and feels correct the pulley on the trans spins OK and so I think I just need a new belt.
As a new person I don't know the experts on the forum and am asking for assistance in anything I should change as I got it this far?

All back together and running great.
Have a feeling the guy just didn't want to mess with it.
Actually it was pretty dang simple

Love that you fixed it yourself. I think you did not get any responces because you where doing so well for yourself. Love all the pictures. Next time include your mowers model number. Most of the helping people on here like a complete picture of what is being worked on.

OK, been 4+ years and I'm thinking I have clutch problems again.
Was mowing for about 40 feet and it died with a full tank.
Won't restart as is.If I lift up the front and spin the blades a little it will fire right up.As soon as I engage the clutch dead.
Any feed back appreciated

Just wondering aloud here. Could it be its stalling because of clutch friction caused by too close tolerances, ie not enough slack in the cable, or too much depending on how the mechanism is designed? Perhaps its dragging slightly, heating up eventually causing the engine to stall and will start again once cooled. Have you ever checked the cables for recommended settings. They do stretch over time. Settings are found in the owners manual. Like I said, just wondering aloud as I've never encountered that problem so I have no experience with it.

Think it's time to rebuild the belt and other parts as I did back then
Can someone either link me to the parts that should be changed or list them?

Maybe try cleaning it out? I assume when you say "clutch" you mean the blade clutch, not the self propelled drive which is what uses the belt. There are a few components to the blade clutch. It's been a long time since I had mine apart, but these are the points I recall.

First - make sure all the bolts are tight. If they are not things will not act properly.

1) When idling with the blade disengaged there is a bearing that the engine is allowed to spin in. Symptoms of this being bad are howling bearings with the blade disengaged.

2) When idling with the blade disengaged there is a friction material designed to drag the blades down and ensure the blades stop quickly in the event of an emergency / you let go of the handles. This friction material COULD be still be dragging even after it should be disengaged. I recall there was some sort of spring / flex plate type assembly in there that helped control when / where everything came together and when it moved apart. If that was all jammed up with gunk it maybe it could cause drag.

3) When the blade is engaged the blade matches the engine speed. There is another friction surface in there that controls this engagement. You may want to try SLOWLY engaging the blades to see if you may just have a timing issue / where it's being pulled too quickly.

4) There is another bearing that should be checked... I can't recall exactly what condition that one spins under, but it MIGHT only be when the blade is engaged, in which case if that was bad it could cause problems too.

Had the wrong part in my head on the thread that is gone
This is the blade assembly and I take it the clutch
Besides the pulley what goes fubar?

I think I’d just take it apart and have a look.

Seems a problem somewhere
I can't get the bolt out of the clutch unit.
The crankshaft turns

Took it all apart and cleaned everything and then reassembled with a new drive belt.
Changed plug and oi and I think it's back to spot on
