I have a Craftsman push 21" mower with a 6.5 Briggs. (#917388971). It hit a rock with the blade, damaged the blade, and broke the bolt off. I managed to remove the part that remained in the mower. When I pull the starter chord, it seems to pull a bit hard in one place, and not sure if that is normal. My concern is that the crank may be bent, and do not want to purchase parts if that is so. Can I try it without the blade? Also the blade adaptor seems to have sheared the shear pin, but willnot come off. Any ideas. RR

If you hit a rock hard enough to break the bolt, I would say go to Vegas if the crank is not bent. Remove the spark plug, tip the mower on it's side, carb up and have someone pull the starter rope. 5 second of looking at the end cof the crank will tell you if it is bent..

Thanks for your response. That is helpful. I removed the gas, used an easy out on the broken bolt, but the blade adapter seems to be turned on the shaft, which would mean the wudruf key is sheared, but it is still stuck on the shaft. I don't have a puller, so this may be a bit difficult, unless I can rent/borrow one. Anyway, once I get that off, if it all looks good, I will order the parts. RR

Usually backward tapping with a hammer will get the hub off. Many of "those" hubs have the key as part of the hub. First do like above to see if the crank is bent. If it is not bent, you'll have to get a new hub
