I have a John Deere ZTR mower. It has a Briggs 40N8770073G1 engine. (Vtwin 20.0 hp 656 cc vertical shaft) (JD mower model Z335E 42A Emission family MJDXPNHEQE01) I went to the Briggs website and it shows the oil filter is a 597557. I am trying to cross it to something that is stocked around here. I am normally good at crossing parts but this is eluding me. I have a bunch of filters for a Briggs on the shelf, P0241, but don't want to just screw on something. What I found online a lot of places are out of stock or selling a no number Briggs filter. Not sure if the 597557 is a number that has been superseded??

I don't see a part # on the filter, maybe on the bottom if I spin it off. It is at my Daughters so not close by. I just wanted to grab a filter the next time I am there. Nice to even cross to a Stens #.

do you also have the John Deere part number? If so you may have better luck running that here https://www.wixfilters.com/en-us/filter-finder.html or any other cross reference, Napaonline etc..

You are overthinking it. Other than the oddball filter that was used on some pushmower engines.. All the Briggs filters are interchangeable with each other.

JD has it as Briggs 492932S Stens 120-485. Looks like Briggs just assign a new PN to throw everyone off the beaten path.

Which is a standard short Briggs filter but you can the long version if there is enough clearance.

The engine still uses the same 84007140 sump as the rest of the 40N8 engines. Briggs actually have several PN for the same filter which are not cross linked. Just a marketing thing trying to throw us off so we buy the Briggs OEM filter instead of the after markets.

FRAM TG8170 for the short filter.
If you have clearance, you can use the FRAM TG3614, WIX 51348, NAPA 1348, Motorcraft FL910s, and etc.
