Help please: GT2142 Drive Shaft Needle Barrel Replacement

I acquired a 2009 GT2142 recently that had been parked for at least a few years (235 total hours). When I got it cranked and took it on a road test, the driveshaft went to banging and came off. I discovered the blue needle barrels on both engine and transmission end had “collapsed.”

I watched 3-4 YouTube videos of some experienced guys replacing them and bolting driveshaft back in place, thanks to each of them.

HOWEVER, I remain confused, see picture below. When I unbolted the barrel holder flange things from each end of drive shaft, dropped it, marked front and rear on both driveshaft and the barrel holder flange things, I discovered a THIRD BARREL HOLDER! My guess is goes on engine end, as that end had longer bolts, but I honestly don’t see the proper way to position it….

HELP, COMMENTS, all appreciated.

Maybe it is an earlier version of the 718-04428A shaft adapter

Having issues with finding a GT2142. Found a GT2542 and GT2148 but no 2142.

Same couplers used on the GT3200 but the service manual doesn't tell how they assembled. Only notes of being careful removing the driveshaft as they can come apart. With this I assuming they are first assembled on the driveshaft and then the driveshaft is installed.

Personally I have yet to see this setup so I am no help on how it is done.

Here is something might help on the engine side assembly.

And I assume the transaxle end is assemble before the driveshaft is installed. Kinda sounds like the fan assembly has to come off so things can be line up with the driveshaft and then work from there.

I wish they cover this a lot better in the service manual.

I did a set of barrels early this year, but just don't remember the fine details.

Do not worry at all , use the 2 best barrel holders and the other as a spacer behind the engine end mounting point
To hold the barrels in place just use a small spray of contact cement makes it dead easy to reassemble
Put the flat face towards the rear , use a good brand of Loctite (bolt fastener glue)
It is an easy job , give everything a good clean whilst you have it apart
I did mine earlier this year a GT 2550

Take off the fender pan and access is quite good , as I said clean but also oil/grease any moving bits you see
It is a 2 person job and will take about 3 hours of slow but steady work
