Help! New Carb - Still Keep Stalling

Hi All -

I've become the laughing stock of my neighbors as I won't give up on fixing this 30 year old mower that has been with me for four houses and since high school.

The mower started having problems starting and then staying running. It dies often when put under a load. I rebuilt the carb and this did not fix the problem. It would still die under load, or would run for a bit at WOT, but then die down and idle at a very slow put, put put, cough... put put and then maybe (maybe) rev up again. So, I replaced with a brand new Tecumseh carburetor. Fresh gas. Same problem persists. Any thoughts?

New carb, check, empty tank and dry it out before new gas put in? check or no check? If not you may have bad gas in your new carb. Also make sure your linkage is perfect.

Yes, tank was clean and new fuel is being used.

I am not sure my linkage is perfect but I did hook it up the way the diagram shows. What I'm unsure of is the tension on the spring and the stiff/bent wire that goes over to the little vertical arm on the side of the mower.

Check that the float level is correct on the carb. Won’t be the first time a new carb is not set properly.

You need to have the spring link and the rod link in the right holes without being twisted. See Photo. No if it still happens where it will not stay running or hard to start, your new carb got dirty somehow. Change the spark plug too, NGK or Champion.

If the float level is correct I would check your valve clearance.
