I have a lawn mower with a Briggs Mod. 92902; Type 5211-01; Code 83012505. I put a Carb Kit in it last summer after cleaning the carb good. Never got it to run well and gave up late in last season. Took it apart, cleaned again and found a spring installed on the wrong side of the diaphragm. Reassembled, checked gap on coil, filled with fresh gas and it started right up. I had it set at 1-1/2 turns out from seated. It runs smooth sitting in one spot, but when I push it downhill it starts to sputter. Runs well when mowing on the level. Sputters when pushed down hill, or side hill, but smooths out when put back on the level. I tired adjusting the carb, backing the screw out, tightening it up, but it doesn't seem to matter. Any thoughts on the cause of this? Should it be "tuned" a little better then just leaving it at 1 1/2 turns out?

Did you check your float level ?

No float...

Your were correct with "no float". It does not have one, I think my fuel is pretty fresh, the mower was always stored in a shed so no direct rainfall on it. I cleaned the tank out when I pulled the carb so I don't think water should be an issue. Would I be able to see water in the fuel tank if I looked in the filler spout?

is that a steel fuel tank? how is the bottom inside the tank rusty?.if any just replace the tank,or find a junker in better shape,that's a 1983 engine its bound to have rust in the tank,

What number sparkplug do you have in it.

Yes it is metal but it is bright and clean in the bottom, so I don't think I will replace it yet.

The spark plug is a Champion RCJ8. I think it is the second one I bought in the 30 years I have owned this mower.

Last night I tried to start it and I pulled and pulled but no go!! Didn't have time to play with it then so I put it away.

Tonight I pulled and pulled and no go, so I primed it with a little gas in the spark plug hole. That is when I realized I did not have the throttle in the "On" position. So I put the throttle in the ON position and pulled once and it started right up. So, now I don't know if priming it helped or if it started on its own. I mowed my back yard and ran it for an hour.

It still sputters and seems to sputter worse when pulled quickly back and forth. It does not seem to change anything when adjusting the throttle mixture screw. It does seem to be running rich, with a tiny bit of smoke just barely noticeable and a slight smell of raw fuel. But it does mow.

I will let it sit over night and try starting it tomorrow afternoon to see if it starts on its own without any priming.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just went out and tried it again. It started on the third pull, which is an improvement over last year when it took four to fire it up.

it still seems to have a skip in it. Almost like it is hunting. But, it is going back to the cottage for the summer to do its work down there.

This is is the first mower I ever bought. I bought it just after I bought my first house, so this mower is kind of special to me. Thirty years old and still chugging along. It is fun to try to keep it going after all these years. The deck is getting a little weak with one hole in it so redecking may be in the future. I only use it a few times a year to mow at the cottage, so hopefully it keeps running.

still open to suggestions on smoothing out how she runs so keep them coming.
