hard pulling when starting

after lapping the valves and setting them at .004 and .009 it runs good but pulls hard almost like it gets stuck (compression?). Does the Briggs 12H802 1531 engine have a compression release?
I'm stumped!

Some times the best/easiest way to start these engines is to pull the starter slowly up to and just after the compression stroke. Then pull hard. Doing so in this manner gives you the flywheel momentum of a couple complete rotations which easily goes past the hard compression stroke.
You can tell if you have a compression release by watching to see if a valve moves "slightly" just before the compression stroke. Often times when grinding/lapping/adjusting valves, people without realizing it, will take their clearance measurements while in the compression release position which would in effect leave you with too much clearance and will cancel out the compression release function. It is advisable to check these clearances a little "after" TDC of the compression stroke.
