Gxv 140 rebuild trouble

Hey everyone! Just a couple questions on a gxv140 hrm215 mower rebuild. What does the oil defense pipe do? The reason I ask is that I reassembled the engine only to break the connecting rod and the cam. Also the piston seized but I was able to save that. The oil was a dark gray color (maybe from alluminum shavings?). There is no oil pump in this engine so I am wondering what circulates the oil in this engine. I am wondering if I am missing an oil slinger in this engine. There was none when I tore it apart. Have new parts on order but will not fire it back up without a solution to this problem. By the way, it ran fine other than the lubrication issue. Thanks guys!

If you are talking about that little black plastic thing that sticks out from the block when you remove the oil pan, as I understand it, it is supposed to help with oil circulation.

Thanks. Yes that is what I'm referring to. I do not know how it is supposed to work, but this may be my problem. It is not broken though and it only snaps in one direction.
