I have a Gravely zero turn mower given to me and the 18hp courage motor has a crack, did research and found this is a common problem with kohler engines, is there a replacement for the SV540 series ? i am hoping the crack can be welded.
There's been quite a bit of discussion of those engines here. I know one of the regulars discussed repairing them in detail but I couldn't find the post.
There is a Briggs replacement ......... I did a repower not long ago for a guy with a Cub Cadet zero turn..... His Dis Courage engine cracked also.....
The cause of that is the bolts that hold the crankcover / sump get loose and the torque of the engine cracks the block..... I have a few friends that have that engine and they bring them to me 2 times a year to check the bolts and retorque.....
Last time I did it I put BLUE loctite on the bolts......
I'll look in my books if you are interested in the the model of the Briggs engine......

Here's the result I got from my search...they don't seem like very good engines...

Thank you, let me know what briggs replacement there is, i am going to see if the block can be welded, if it can be welded i will be using blue loctite on the bolts, would use red, but might need to take apart one day.

got the block welded up and in good shape and finally got it back together, now i have a problem with fuel spitting out the filter side with the filter housing and filter out and no power, figured that is flooding even tried a new carb with same result kinda stumped.
