I hope I'm not stepping out of line here by creating a new post & being new to the forums. I wasn't having any luck finding what I was looking for.

I've decided to get a lot more involved with my lawn this year rather than just cutting it like I have in years past. I'm a homeowner now so I'm starting to take a little bit more pride in it.

My question is regarding the fertilization process. I'm going to put down some Scotts Turfbuilder with weed control this weekend. I'm not sure what height the grass should be when I spread it. Is it better to do it while the grass is somewhat high? And when I mean high I'm not talking overgrown 2 foot weeds. I just mean the highest lawnmower setting. Or would it be better for me to cut the grass as short as possible?

That fertilizer prefers to be spread on wet turf. Do you have alot of weeds? If so what type? If they are broad leaf I would not cut too short so the leaf is gone. I would think a wet broad leaf weed would help with the weed control agent to stick to the weed and kill it.

Long story short I would fertilize at a time when I wont have to mow for a couple days.

Do you mulch or bag? For future reference if you dont have alot of weeds concider a regular scotts fert and spot treat weeds as needed.

Also start with a sharp blade. You should be setting your mower at about 3.5" for the summer.

I'd figure out what kind of grass you've got in your lawn, (Kentucky Bluegrass, perhaps?) and mow it to the low range of its recommended height. Then do your overseeding, wait until a couple of weeks after your seeds germinate, mow again, and then apply your fertilizer. Different grasses have different recommended mowing heights. Also, just as a rule of thumb, don't remove more than 33% off the top of your grass at any one time. My favorite book on all this jazz is by Jerry Baker. A good local nursery can be a great asset as well.
