go kart woes

The grandkids are in for a few days and were looking forward to riding the go karts but both of them are down.

One has a Tecumseh 5 hp model OH50.

The primer bubble isn't working and when I give it a shot of carb cleaner and pull it a few (or more than a few) and open the throttle it will eventually start. I will run fair until I let off of the throttle and then it will quit. Hard to restart and then the same problem. I didn't have a carb kit but I tore it down and cleaned it up as best I could.

I am not a pro but I can usually get a gasoline engine to run.

I live in a small town and by the time I order and receive the part the kids will be gone home.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, Pete

The symptoms that you are talking about normally would indicate a fuel problem. Most likely still dirt in the carb, restricting fuel flow.

Dirt or stale fuel was my thought as well. I drained and replaced the fuel and added some Seafoam. I also removed the carb and took it apart and cleaned it out with carb cleaner. I sprayed cleaner through all of the orifices and they seemed clear. I might remove the carbs and let them soak in cleaner for a few hours and see if that helps.

I did this with both engines (B&S)

Thanks, Pete

When I was a kid and played with karts, 35 years ago, I never, ever had any luck with tecumseh engines and it was one carb issue after another. Perhaps it was my lack of understanding of the engine, but I have had that problem with briggs. Here we are 35 years later and I joined this site with tecumseh carb mower issues. My dad gave me the mower, I would've never bought it.

Even worse than the tecumsehs were my Mac kart engines. Sure wish I still had them though lol.

Probably my best kart engine was an 8hp briggs with no governor it would flat get it.
