I've got a relatively new mower < 150 hours. This spring I went to start it and the starter appears to turn over but the engine does not. Basically I turn the key and the starter whines like its turning over but the engine does nothing. Do you think this is a symptom of a weak battery or something else?

Based on your question, it sounds like your first start for the spring, right? The battery is the first place to start. Have you tried charging the battery? If the engine won't even turn over and the starter wines a bit but does not engage, must be the battery. If it doesn't hold a charge, time to replace it. My Grasshopper dealer sells them for about $25.
By the way, is it last years gas? Did you put a stabilizer in the fuel?

kinda sounds like the bendix on your starter is'nt kicking the gear to engage the flywheel.do you have somebody around to look when you try to start it?...russ
