Hi !

I own a MTD Yardmachines 5.5 HP Tiller Model 21A-422B129.

I am looking for some advice on how to repair/resolve a problem that I have with the gears and shifting

Seems that the "Shift Assembly" (part# 618-0245B) jumps out of position of the "Clutch Collar" (part# 718-0234) when the Tines are engaged

When the "Shift Assembly" has dislocated it cannot be re-positioned without opening the "Gear Case Assembly? Seems that the shift assembly goes too far or some of the gear parts have been damaged.

Also wondering what should limit the "Shift Assembly" from "popping out" of the Clutch Collar ?

From visual inspection there is no visible damage to the gear shift assembly parts.

The only possible visible damage is on the "Shift Assembly" (part# 6180245B) where the "Peggs" that shall engage on the Clutch Collar (part# 718-0234) seem slightly worn, see enclosed pictures. Also the legs on the shift fork are not exactly 90 degree (straight Angle), slightly wider at top, though not sure if that is intended or a damage...

Would appreciate if someone could provide some guidance on what to look for or what is the most likely/common issue I should look for ?

Also if I replace the "Shift Assembly" (part# 618-0245B) it is not obvious how to remove the "Crank Shift Assembly" (part# 686-0095). There is a "Spiral pin" (part #715-0120) that must be removed, though unclear how to remove this one.

Should it be punched out or is there some there a trick/special tool required ? Guidance appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your support

PS for higher resoution pictures see enclsoed pdf

The one pin is called a roll pin, and you will need the correct size roll pin punch.

Here is an exploded pic.
