gcv160 enigne runs fine for a few minutes then quits

honda gcv160 engine on a troy built 21 inch push mower. starts first pull then dies after a few minutes of running.. anyone have any suggestions where to look for the problem, air cleaner new and clean clean, new gas, new oil, new plug.

Hi Keith,

Does it have an in line fuel filter? If so, replace it. Make sure the vent hole in the gas cap isn't plugged also.

When it stops running, I assume it won't start right back up? Do a spark test and if you are getting bright spark but no start, it is probably fuel/air delivery problem (too much or too little of either). Inspect choke...is it a manual style or automatic?

If there is even a SPECK of dirt/dust/debris inside the carb, it can make the engine run poorly or not start. While the carb can be cleaned, it may be frustrating to do if you've not done one before, and a whole new carb is often less than $25. It can often be much less frustrating to chase down a tiny carb problem by just replacing the carb.
