The cylinder filled with gas, it wouldn't crank, so I removed the spark plug and gas poured out.

Hydrolocked by definition.
Perhaps you have a question as to why?
Likely a stuck float/needle in carb.

Also look for gasoline in the crankcase. And smell on dipstick, change your oil + filter a time or two, gasoline will dilute your oil and bye bye engine.

Definitely change oil & filter a couple times. Crank over the engine w/spark plug removed till it has no more gas is coming out.
Just for safety sake, add a gas in-line shut off valve. My old mower had that happen on a 20 hp Briggs. Once was enough for me to add the gas petcock.
