I opened my fuel tank on the mower once and a piece of the gas cap fell off and into my gas tank. I ordered a new cap. I gave the oppropriate part number - that being 37844. The cap I received looks different than the one I had. I have posted two pictures. The first looks like the cap that broke. the silver part is what fell off. I was using the new cap and thought I was having carburator problems - gas not getting to engine. When I was taking the mower apart to look at carburetor, I noticed only a limited amount of gas flowed out of fuel line from tank to carb. I knew the tank was full. When I loosened the cap (to remove it to check for gas) just the release of pressure allowed the gas to start flowing out the fuel line. Could my problem be the gas cap?

Cap is not letting tank breath (no vent hole in the cap) can't you fish out the part that went into the tank and refit it..?
What engine is fitted to you're Craftsman a make and model would be helpful.

The engine if Tecumseh. The cap I ordered is listed as being the correct part. Unfortunately, after I received the new cap, I threw the other one away. Thank you for your reply.
I did watch that video. I thought the message from the video was that the new caps gave people less problems than the original caps. Should I buy the old type cap with the little 'dish' in the lid? Thank you for your post.

I put up the video link just to show you what to look out for. going by you're post I would say that its the cap that may well be giving you the problem, so if you can't look out what is wrong with the cap, try other one.
